Hear Marc answer questions about his career and how he came to write his second book.

Hear him reinterpret England’s Industrial Revolution. Simply put, capitalists used the law to maintain their grip on class power. Marc thus corrects Karl Polanyi’s theory that workers had free choice. Capitalists, Marc shows, used master-servant laws to *compel* workers to labor in a timely manner. Employers could prosecute underperforming workers as criminals. So in fact workers were hardly free. Much less free than Polanyi would have us believe. In other words, it turns out that criminal prosecutions kept control firmly in the hands of capitalists.

This book revises conventional wisdom. What’s more, Marc’s retelling of its genesis reminds us of what made Marc Marc.
