Shortly before his death, Marc spoke of his devotion to The Literacy Project. Judith Roberts (AC ’00), the Project’s executive director, was a student of Marc’s and an Ada Comstock scholar at Smith. Based in Greenfield, the Literacy Project offers basic education programs and volunteer opportunities to adults throughout the Pioneer Valley.

The Literacy Project’s impact is twofold:

First, it helps adults build skills vital to work, home life and greater participation in their communities.

Second, as these individuals thus participate more in economic, cultural and civic life, they contribute distinctive skills and perspectives. Thanks to the Literacy Project, participants who might otherwise themselves be marginalized help others. They also promote greater inclusion and empowerment for all of us.
