Marc collected comics out of fascination with categories and their erasure. In many, the world of academic ideas collided with the world of commonplace objects. Conventional wisdom may classify banal things like breakfast cereal as fundamentally different from formal sociological theory. Yet the punchlines of Marc’s favored comics often suggest that this distinction is illusory. Or perhaps all categorization is illusory?
It is easy to see in these humorous imaginings Marc’s love of the irreverent mixing of “high” and “low” culture. Above all, this leveling grants ordinary life the same respectful consideration as philosophy.
