The Thoughtful Fund was established in 2020 in memory of Marc W. Steinberg (1956-2019). Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Marc was a devoted professor at Smith College in Massachusetts.

The Fund was founded to further compassionate giving (tzedakah) led by Quaker commitments to simplicity, sustainability and peace. The Fund has been inspired by the tenets of effective altruism. Allocations evolve through Quaker listening and discernment. Current priorities include global health, curing blindness, environmental sustainability, food security, and refugee resettlement. The Fund’s advisor welcomes consultation about thoughtful ways to make a difference.
